Dead Pioneers: No Kings
(Hassle Records)
Out Now
This second single from the upcoming third Dead Pioneers album Wagon Burner is no less punchy or to the point than its predecessor Nazi Teeth. Audiences at some of their recent UK and EU tour dates were treated to a sneak preview of this number.
Anyone keeping an eye on the USA will know that Trump’s increasingly autocratic approach, and fears he might circumvent the constitution to serve beyond the current two term limit led to “No Kings” being a frequent theme for banners on anti-Trump rallies over a year ago. This led to a series of specific “No Kings” rallies last summer. Dead Pioneers take the old anarchist slogan No Gods No Masters and apply it to Trumpistan:
No Kings, no masters
An American disaster
No kings, no masters
Kick against the fascist bastards
Continuing in a similar vein to earlier releases, Dead Pioneers give us a galloping and eerie tune with a heavy chorus. A soaring middle 8 leads into a section in which Gregg’s vocal builds in intensity in much the same way Rage Against The Machine’s Zach de La Rocha’s vocal did on Killing In The Name all those years ago. The difference is that Gregg’s message varies in its focus, illustrating the range of interests the capitalist system and the US political system serves.
Just to make sure you get the message, the video is all about the lyrics.
Dead Pioneers are playing the same sort of role Dead Kennedys played in the 80s. The name provokes an instant reaction in a certain kind of uptight establishment person. They are also holding up a mirror to American society with humour as well as righteous anger, and the occasional bit of swearing: “Fuck You and Your Golden Toilet”.
Wagon Burner is out on 26th June and available for pre-order from Hassle Records

A Plea From Louder Than War
Louder Than War is run by a small but dedicated independent team, and we rely on the small amount of money we generate to keep the site running smoothly. Any money we do get is not lining the pockets of oligarchs or mad-cap billionaires dictating what our journalists are allowed to think and write, or hungry shareholders. We know times are tough, and we want to continue bringing you news on the most interesting releases, the latest gigs and anything else that tickles our fancy. We are not driven by profit, just pure enthusiasm for a scene that each and every one of us is passionate about.
To us, music and culture are eveything, without them, our very souls shrivel and die. We do not charge artists for the exposure we give them and to many, what we do is absolutely vital. Subscribing to one of our paid tiers takes just a minute, and each sign-up makes a huge impact, helping to keep the flame of independent music burning! Please click the button below to help.
