Cartoon series Bob’s Burgers has posted the show’s characters performing a cover of Joy Division’s ‘Transmission’ on its YouTube page.
The show, currently on a mid-season break, follows burger restaurant owner Bob (voiced by H. Jon Benjamin) who runs his business with his chaotic wife and three children. In the clip, shared on Bob’s Burgers Side Orders YouTube page, Bob is seen with his son Gene (voiced by Eugene Mirman) performing the 1981 classic. You can watch the video in full below.
Bob performs the vocals with Gene playing a keyboard. Benjamin’s deep baritone has echoes of the late Joy Division singer Ian Curtis, albeit with an amateur and comedic twist. Gene’s keyboard playing is also punctuated with comedy sound effects, and the video featured psychadelic visuals to accompany the performance.
This isn’t the first time the cast have covered a beloved song, as the voice actors for the show covered Chappell Roan’s ‘Pink Pony Club’ in character during an appearance at San Diego Comic Con last year.
Bob’s Burgers is a long running animated sitcom now in its 16th season. Beginning in 2011, it has gone on to have a crossover episode with the spy series Archer (which also features Benjamin as the lead voice), as well as having cameo appearances in The Simpsons and Family Guy. A movie spin-off was released in cinemas in 2022.
Last year, star Benjamin revealed how his character helped him become a better father. “Bob is a really good parent – very supportive, very present, pretty patient. He’s a good dad for what he has to go through,” he said in an interview. “I’m a terrible dad. I’m like the exact opposite. Thankfully, Bob’s Burgers totally helped my parenting. I was the meanest dad. And then I slowly started getting more like Bob – but it was too late.”
