Immersion remain resolutely anti-nostalgia, despite their celebrated histories. The new single “Megafauna” is one of three instrumentals on the album, with a dark dub groove which provides an essential counterpoint to the album’s poppier moments including the album’s lead single, “We Don’t Need Your Validation.”
As Colin and Malka explain, “The title ‘Megafauna’ reflects the music – lumbering large creatures moving slowly to the beat and are drawn to the sound of a primordial piper.”
Journalist John Robb has described the song as; “a brooding slice of cosmic dark energy as Immersion take a trip to the dark side of the moon. Its majestic Cimmerian mood underlines the ebb and flow of sounds and textures as the duo break out of their own soundscapes.”
The song’s video features sculptures called “Soft Machines” by Ivan Morison on Hove seafront as part of Brighton Festival May 2026. The drummers are part of a performance of“Sense of Unity with Dundu” in Whitehawk as part of Brighton Festival May 2018.
The upcoming album What Is Lost Will Return is the second “pure” Immersion release in as many years and the third UK tour since 2024. It follows up 2025’s WTF?? and the title reflects the fact that there’s only so many times you can say “What The F*ck??” before looking beyond to see what endures. As Colin and Malka, the ever-productive ‘life and art partner,’ explain, “The emotion we feel the album invokes is a poignant mixture of joy and melancholy.”
Recorded in a flash of inspiration, the instant karma of the album’s short gestation captures a creative moment. It comes armed with killer hooks and a fascination with the future that pushes the duo’s musical hallmarks into new spaces without losing their knack for impeccable minimalism. This is underlined by the twin vocals, which create cool contrasts, swirling between Malka’s dreamy chorus sections and Colin’s sardonic semi-spoken lyrics that pull you into their world of observations and sketches. Deeply intelligent, this is a multi-layered album of lyrical ideas and textures that demands to be heard.
This is also an album of lyrical hope in chaotic times, as Immersion stand apart in a world gone mad. Wry and observational, their words acknowledge contemporary madness with a sense of detachment over shape-shifting, minimalist grooves. The aesthetic is best summed up by title track ‘What Is Lost Will Return’ and its can-do lyrics, which form the philosophical core of the album. The song brings a message of hope in the static babble of the nihilist now and music to match that message. Another standout cut is the dramatic pulsating electronic drone of ‘Megafauna,’ with its ominous guitar lines and discordant desert flutes. It’s typical of an album of unexpected delights and very much of the moment.
What Is Lost Will Return is an album of grooves, observational snapshots, hypnotic repetition, joyful creation, intoxicating melody and mystery, all threaded together by a fascination with new sounds and extures. It’s both an underground gem and an album that bends pop into new shapes Through constant reinvention, they have honed their sound into a startling present that references their past but refuses to live in it.
