Yorkshire’s champions of the discordant dance riff Coal Mob burst into action once more with their new single What Do You Think I Said? And little doubt that this pressing question is posed with their own unique blend of post-punk, indie and dance-punk just right to send us all into a highly undignified frenzy. Ian Corbridge reviews…

Since first meeting at Leeds conservatoire and getting to know each other simply through playing music, it has become apparent that the fusion of so many contrasting musical tastes that all the members of Coal Mob bring to the table has allowed their sound to develop into quite a unique spin on what you might call indie dance punk. Citing their main influences from contemporaries such as Fontaines DC, Shame, and Courting, through to classics like New Order, The Cure, and the Pigeon Detectives, they have developed a strong penchant for blending hard driving rhythms with vibrant melodic inter-plays all wrapped up with a strong youthful energy which translates well both in their studio recordings and live performances.

What is immediately obvious is that they have a sound which is both catchy and infectious aside from always being very danceable. And this is most definitely a feeling which exudes from Coal Mob’s first release of 2026, their new single, What Do You Think I Said?

As the song opens with a single guitar chord and then the shout of What Do You Think I Said?, the song immediately explodes into life with Rohan’s strident and angular guitar riffs, urgent and staccato rhythms, Will’s tight and exhuberant bass lines, Ellis’ frenetic drum patterns, and Jack’s swirling synth, whilst all the while, Dom’s fast, shouty and punk infused vocals unfold a neurotic journey of both anxiety and release. This lightning bolt of post-punk energy has already become a live favourite and one guaranteed to get the mosh pit in a frenzy.

A Plea From Louder Than War

Louder Than War is run by a small but dedicated independent team, and we rely on the small amount of money we generate to keep the site running smoothly. Any money we do get is not lining the pockets of oligarchs or mad-cap billionaires dictating what our journalists are allowed to think and write, or hungry shareholders. We know times are tough, and we want to continue bringing you news on the most interesting releases, the latest gigs and anything else that tickles our fancy. We are not driven by profit, just pure enthusiasm for a scene that each and every one of us is passionate about.

To us, music and culture are eveything, without them, our very souls shrivel and die. We do not charge artists for the exposure we give them and to many, what we do is absolutely vital. Subscribing to one of our paid tiers takes just a minute, and each sign-up makes a huge impact, helping to keep the flame of independent music burning! Please click the button below to help.
