Hey hey it’s Helen Love! Precious Recordings Of London sneak out a limited 7” featuring four brand new tracks from the Welsh legends.

Described as ‘four slices of pure Helen for the romantic souls among us’ the Some Fucking Love Songs EP arrives somewhat out of the blue. It’s been four years since the last ‘proper’ album, This is My World, although there have been an ‘outtakes’ release, a compilation and a legendary Steve Lamacq session from 1998 which features a great version of The Clash’s Tommy Gun, in the intervening years.

This new release has a Northern Soul feel to it, Love explaining, “I’ve always loved Northern Soul music, and I’m always buying compilation albums and finding great lost 45s that are just incredible”, but despite that influence, Love makes it her own.

She may have been releasing records for more than 30 years but there is no sign of the quality diminishing, this EP being up there with anything that’s gone before. Each of the tracks on this release will make you want to make you move and clap your hands… even when there aren’t supposed to be any! And I’m saying that as a self-confessed occasional foot tapper, or at best shuffler…

What never ceases to amaze me is Love’s ability to practically overload the senses with the sound of what you’d think is a 20 piece orchestra but in reality, is an intricately considered and layered production that delivers a set of kitchen sink vignettes with a quick danceable tempo and heavy 4 x 4 beats.

Once you get this on your turntable you won’t be taking it off for a while… I could go on but honestly sometimes things don’t need to be overanalysed they just need to be listened to…

A Plea From Louder Than War

Louder Than War is run by a small but dedicated independent team, and we rely on the small amount of money we generate to keep the site running smoothly. Any money we do get is not lining the pockets of oligarchs or mad-cap billionaires dictating what our journalists are allowed to think and write, or hungry shareholders. We know times are tough, and we want to continue bringing you news on the most interesting releases, the latest gigs and anything else that tickles our fancy. We are not driven by profit, just pure enthusiasm for a scene that each and every one of us is passionate about.

To us, music and culture are eveything, without them, our very souls shrivel and die. We do not charge artists for the exposure we give them and to many, what we do is absolutely vital. Subscribing to one of our paid tiers takes just a minute, and each sign-up makes a huge impact, helping to keep the flame of independent music burning! Please click the button below to help.
