Billboard‘s rock album charts feature a pair of new No. 1s on the March 28-dated tallies in the form of Johnny Blue Skies and Lamb of God.
Mutiny After Midnight, credited to Johnny Blue Skies & the Dark Clouds (Johnny Blue Skies was formerly known as Sturgill Simpson, and the Dark Clouds are his backing band), reigns on the Top Rock & Alternative Albums and Top Rock Albums tallies, while Lamb of God’s Into Oblivion reigns on Top Hard Rock Albums.
Mutiny After Midnight marks Johnny Blue Skies’ second No. 1 on Top Rock & Alternative Albums, following the one-week reign of A Sailor’s Guide to Earth (billed to Simpson) in 2016. In the week ending March 19, the new set earned 59,000 equivalent album units in the United States, according to Luminate, with all being physical sales as the LP has only been released on physical formats so far.
That being said, one song from the album has made a Billboard chart: “Situation,” which was released as the lead radio single. It bows at No. 38 on Adult Alternative Airplay, following in the footsteps of the Johnny Blue Skies song “Mint Tea” from 2024’s Passage Du Desir, which peaked at No. 37. Simpson’s overall best, “Sing Along,” reached No. 7 in 2019.
Mutiny After Midnight also bows atop Americana/Folk Albums, the act’s fifth ruler (the first four were under Simpson). On the all-genre Billboard 200, the album starts at No. 3, equaling the peak of A Sailor’s Guide to Earth.
As for Lamb of God, Into Oblivion accumulated 26,000 units en route to its No. 1 debut on Top Hard Rock Albums, with 23,000 via album sales.
The rockers now boast six No. 1s on the chart since its 2007 inception, dating to 2009’s Wrath. Only five acts — Linkin Park, Pearl Jam, Five Finger Death Punch, Foo Fighters and Ghost — have more rulers.
Concurrently, Lamb of God appears on the March 28 Hot Hard Rock Songs chart with “St. Catherine’s Wheel,” which ranks at No. 22 with 438,000 official U.S. streams. The title track also reached the tally in January at No. 20.
