Rising shoegaze artist Wisp made her debut on Australia’s long-running triple j segment ‘Like A Version’ with a reimagined take on Green Day’s 2009 ballad “Last Night on Earth.”
Explaining her song choice, the singer said the decision was straightforward.
“I chose this cover, it’s a very simple reason, I just think it’s a cute song,” Wisp said in the studio. “It’s easy, it’s fun and I had it on a playlist for a long time, so I knew all the words already.”
Originally released on Green Day’s 21st Century Breakdown, “Last Night on Earth” has become a fan favorite for its stripped-back emotional tone.
She also revealed that the song played a role in shaping her upcoming material.
“I was curating a bunch of songs that I wanted to find inspiration in for the next album that I’m writing,” she explained. “And the Green Day song was one of those.”
Wisp, who frequently builds playlists for both herself and her fans, said ‘Last Night on Earth’ lived on a personal moodboard playlist influencing her next project.
Alongside the Green Day cover, Wisp also performed her original track ‘Black Swan’ during her ‘Like A Version’ appearance.
‘Like A Version’ has long been a launchpad for high-calibre reinterpretations, with artists often putting bold spins on well-known tracks. Wisp’s version of ‘Last Night on Earth’ fits squarely into that tradition, trading the original’s polished rock production for shimmering distortion and a dreamlike haze.
