Aja Ireland hits the club with Moult Mouth: an EP full of vibrant rhythms, techno and creativity. Andy Brown soaks up the endless energy.
Aja Ireland is the kind of artist where creativity seems to ooze from every pore; where every aspect of her art is instilled with vibrancy and invention. The first time I saw her perform, she was dressed like some otherworldly tiger and screaming from behind a shower curtain. All the while, the room was flooded with strobes and industrial techno. I mean, you don’t forget something like that in a hurry. This new EP – Moult Mouth – captures that live intensity and bombards our woefully unprepared senses for 30 brain scrambling minutes.
Taking inspiration from club culture and queer nightlife, the EP buzzes with endless, empowering and life-affirming energy. The Nottingham-based experimentalist embraces everything from industrial techno to dance-inducing avant-garde pop. It’s the sound of an artist riding a tidal wave of inspiration and fully committing to the noise inside their head. No half measures and no apologies. You can hear when someone is in that kind of space and that excitement – that commitment – really comes across in the recordings.
We’re lured into Club Aja with a bold mix of synth strings, Brazilian rhythms and experimental hip hop. “Say my name/ Say it in your Motorola,” she sings with all the self-assurance and sensuality that the dancefloor demands, “I just wanna/ I just wanna get to know ya.” The track’s called Mami Voguer and it is – it has to be said – an unimpeachable banger. The accompanying video is a psychedelic fever dream straight from Ireland’s subconscious.
Grind It Like is playful and gloriously idiosyncratic. Electronic sounds spark and ping around the room; unpredictable and unrelenting. “Sex sells/ But we not selling it” she sings from the heart of the strobe-lit sanctuary, “We movin’ bodies baby, cus it is cathartic.” Every inch of this song implores you to move and let go of the weight you’ve been carrying. Dissolving negativity upon impact; the track creates a safe space for self-expression and uninhibited joy.
“Come on baby just smile/ You’d look so much prettier if you smiled,” comes the creepy, slowed down voice at the start of Smile. The EP is undoubtedly celebratory but it’s also one that draws a line in the sand and kicks a certain kind of bullshit decisively to the curb. “My teeth sharp/ Like a sword,” she sings over frazzled, deconstructed club beats, “I’ll be the smiliest you ever saw.” Just look at that incredible image on the cover: no one messes with Aja Ireland.
Category Femme goes hard with six-minutes of heavy techno. It’s like someone’s put my brain in a washing machine and set off the spin cycle. It’s easily the most intense thing here… well, that is until the equally relentless Gloss comes throbbing through the speakers. Woah! The night opens up in front of us with the arrival of the deliciously dark and irresistible Soft Feral. While I’d probably come across a little Mark Corrigan on the dancefloor, even I couldn’t resist flailing my arms around to this one.
From front to back, the EP is exciting, engaging and completely unmoored from anything remotely formulaic. Ireland firmly puts the fun back into experimentation with a sound that is both unconventional and ecstatic. In times like this we need all the positive energy we can get and Moult Mouth is absolutely crammed full of the stuff. Now, we just need Ireland to actually open up her own club.
