Koyo Bloom: Discipline
Self-Released
Out Now
Koyo Bloom’s latest offering, Discipline, again demonstrates the versatility and skill of a band with an innate ability to craft songs of the highest calibre.
Soulful, uplifting, laid-back and playful, the track washes over you like a cool breeze on a hot summer’s day. A C&W tinged intro heralds a splendidly lilting song which introduces layer upon layer of aural massage as it progresses. Huw’s mellow vocal delivery is the perfect medium, as delicious harmonies, chilled musicianship, memorable chorus and a divine keys-led bridge complete the effect, the mood nicely captured by the atmospheric video.
Despite the dreamy, almost psychedelic feel, there is a serious aspect to Discipline. As the band explain, “The main theme of ‘Discipline’ is this idea of having your time stolen — not wanting to look back and feel like life was spent endlessly clearing notifications, always immediately accessible, always available. It’s about the discipline it takes to lead a happy life.” But despite the apparent weightiness of the subject matter, the track never feels overly-serious with its effective but light-hearted imagery illustrating that these guys have a way with words as well as notes:
I’m the long way round,
But I’m scenic,
You’re the shortcut,
Makin’ me car sick.
For those unfamiliar with Koyo Bloom’s work, Discipline is a great introduction and an appetising taste for what’s to come with the forthcoming album. But make sure to check out the back catalogue too, for this is a band which is hard to pin down and never stops evolving, experimenting and taking new directions, the only constant being the craftsmanship and creativity which they pour into everything they do.

A Plea From Louder Than War
Louder Than War is run by a small but dedicated independent team, and we rely on the small amount of money we generate to keep the site running smoothly. Any money we do get is not lining the pockets of oligarchs or mad-cap billionaires dictating what our journalists are allowed to think and write, or hungry shareholders. We know times are tough, and we want to continue bringing you news on the most interesting releases, the latest gigs and anything else that tickles our fancy. We are not driven by profit, just pure enthusiasm for a scene that each and every one of us is passionate about.
To us, music and culture are eveything, without them, our very souls shrivel and die. We do not charge artists for the exposure we give them and to many, what we do is absolutely vital. Subscribing to one of our paid tiers takes just a minute, and each sign-up makes a huge impact, helping to keep the flame of independent music burning! Please click the button below to help.
