Some artists will do just about anything to promote their new album. But only Kacey Musgraves is willing to suit up in a giant armadillo costume and head down to the local Walmart to wander the aisles and ask if they have her new Middle of Nowhere album in stock. “I don’t recognize that name,” a helpful employee at the megastore tells the singer when she inquires about her LP in a hilarious promo video the singer posted over the weekend. After pulling off an impressive forward roll in the store, Musgraves finally finds a display packed with vinyl copies of her mesmerizing seventh album, on which she teams up with fellow Texan Willie Nelson on the twangy “Uncertain, TX,” as well as Miranda Lambert on the hilarious “Horses & Divorces” and bluegrass phenom Billy Strings on the dreamy “Everybody Wants To Be a Cowboy.”

She grabs a couple LPs before moseying over to a Barnes & Noble, where she delights some little girls by casually skulking around in the spotted costume and saying hello before looking up armadillo facts in a children’s book, crawling around on all fours and grabbing some more vinyl. Next stop: Target, where Musgraves paws at that store’s vinyl rack and appears to get revved up while straddling some of her merch.

It’s all smiles and fun and games until the end of the clip, where, like so many armadillos, Musgraves ends up on her back as roadkill in the middle of a street.

Middle of Nowhere is the frisky follow-up to the singer’s more inward-looking 2024 LP Deeper Well and includes the playful single, “Dry Spell,” on which Musgraves comes up with endless ways to describe not getting any for nearly a year. “I’m so lonely, lonely with a capital H/ If you know what I mean/ I’ve been sitting on the washing machine,” she sings cheekily on the spare country pop unintentional abstinence lament.

Musgraves is in the midst of a three-show blitz in her native Texas at Gruene Hall in New Braunfels — there are shows scheduled for tonight (May 4) and tomorrow (May 5) — where she will be joined by the Mariachi Brothers. The McAllen-area siblings, Antonio, Caleb and Joshua Gámez-Cuéllar, were arrested along with their family by ICE and detained in Texas for about two weeks before they were released in March amid growing unrest over the Donald Trump administration’s immigration enforcement policies. They played on Capitol Hill last year at the invitation of Rep. Monica De La Cruz, a Republican congresswoman who has been a vocal supporter of President Trump and his wide-ranging immigration crackdown.
