FM Experiment: Fly – Single ReviewFM Experiment: Fly

(FMXP Records)

Out Now

Jazz-tronica trio FM Experiment share the sprawling new single Fly. A striking and inventive blend of swirling electronics, inventive live instrumentation and experimental ideas, the track is at once danceable and vibrantly creative.

Taken from their forthcoming conceptual album Icarus, the track finds the trio leaning deeper into their hybrid identity, bringing a hypnotic blend of live improvisation with immersive electronic production to create a sound which would be at home among electronic chillout such as Bonobo and Maribou State, as much as it would more jazz leaning projects like BADBADNOTGOOD.

Thrives on a tension and experimentation between precision and spontaneity, Fly brings together driving, live drums, with swirls of cinematic synths, deep sub bass and fuzz soaked guitar lines which circle around the hypnotic main riff. Broken up by repitched spoken word recordings, courtesy of poet Valerie Hill, the track culminates in an explosive and climactic guitar solo.

Speaking about the themes behind the track, the band explain: “When you look up at the sky, you might think it’s a destination, what you’ve always worked for, your most burning desire. But what if the journey was actually what you craved, what fulfilled you? Wouldn’t that be liberating?”

To deepen the narrative, FM Experiment collaborated with poet Valerie Hill, whose original spoken-word pieces thread through the album. Her voice, fragmented and reassembled within the music, acts as both guide and counterpoint, reinforcing the conceptual spine of the project.

FM Experiment unites French drummer and producer Flo Mavridorakis, American Grammy-winning keyboardist Warren Pettey, and Italian guitarist Francesco Stacciolli. Together, they’ve built a reputation for dissolving genre boundaries, weaving jazz foundations through funk, hip-hop, afro-beat, and electronic influences.

Following their debut album Shades and the fully improvised beat tapes Imperfections and The Figueroa Beat Tape, the trio now step into more conceptual territory with their upcoming album Icarus.

A Plea From Louder Than War

Louder Than War is run by a small but dedicated independent team, and we rely on the small amount of money we generate to keep the site running smoothly. Any money we do get is not lining the pockets of oligarchs or mad-cap billionaires dictating what our journalists are allowed to think and write, or hungry shareholders. We know times are tough, and we want to continue bringing you news on the most interesting releases, the latest gigs and anything else that tickles our fancy. We are not driven by profit, just pure enthusiasm for a scene that each and every one of us is passionate about.

To us, music and culture are eveything, without them, our very souls shrivel and die. We do not charge artists for the exposure we give them and to many, what we do is absolutely vital. Subscribing to one of our paid tiers takes just a minute, and each sign-up makes a huge impact, helping to keep the flame of independent music burning! Please click the button below to help.
